Welcome to the MAIDENHEAD MAYHEM WINNERS page!

Here we will post who won some of our sponsors generous prizes!

Here are the Winners and their Prizes from the July 2023 Maidenhead Mayhem!

Prize #1, MFJ-936C, Deluxe High Efficiency Magnetic Loop tuner. And the winner is:   DAN AC3JR

Thank you for a great contest, it was both challenging and entertaining for many reasons. I very much look forward to participating for many years to come!
Originally, I had spotted this contest on the WA7BNM Contest Calendar while looking for more contests.  As a new ham who had recently acquired a taste for contesting with my local radio club, Horseshoe Amateur Radio Club, K3HRC, I was looking for more opportunities to hone my skills as an operator. Unfortunately, I missed participating in the sprint, but marked my calendar for the full contest.
The Maidenhead Mayhem caught my interest almost immediately for a few reasons, primarily, the broad range of contest time, and the limit on operating time.  Being a young, new ham, I have a full-time job, so my “butt-in-chair” time is naturally limited.  My chief complaint with most other HF contests is simply that the winners usually have the most operating time. (Ironically, I actually didn’t use very much of my total allowed operating time.) Secondly, the scoring for the contest was extremely appealing as it captured elements that make VHF contesting challenging and exciting. It was thrilling to spin the dial, crawl spotting networks, pour over space/solar weather reports, and feel a rush of excitement when hearing a distant or difficult grid.  And lastly, a unique incentive was the hope of receiving a prize!

I was fortunate to receive the MFJ Loop Antenna and Tuner Kit as my prize for participating.  From my first impressions, it performed very differently than my homemade W5GI Mystery Antenna setup. The loop was very quiet, as the Q is very narrow, and the directivity is excellent. This greatly improved noise and QRM conditions.  It was helpful to attach my NanoVNA to visualize the tuning process.  Next Summer, I hope to use this antenna for POTA Activations, as its very portable and easy to setup, and so I don’t have to fiddle with the knobs as much while operating.  Perhaps I’ll also fire it up for next year’s Mayhem!

Thanks again to all who organized and participated in the contest, please invite your fellow hams to join in the Mayhem!

Hope to see you on the air!
73,
Dan, AC3JR

Prize #6, MFJ-566P, CW TELEGRAPH KEY,
ON PLASTIC BASE
And the winner is: David KO6M

W6JFA and I (KO6M) brought the straight key that I won during the Mayhem to our activation of Alpine County during the California QSO Party.

After setting up their station on top of Mount Reba they used the key to make several contacts (while barely knowing CW). I think it is a great addition to the station both while doing expeditions and at the QTH.  It’s helped foster the desire to get more proficient at CW and I hope to be fully contesting with it within the next few months.

Heil Ham Radio has been manufacturing specialized headsets, microphones, and equalization products for the Amateur Radio market since 1982.

From the beginning, company founder Bob Heil knew that voice articulation is key to ham radio, both for emergency use as well as for the hobbyist. Heil Ham Radio’s headsets for ham radio – from the Handi Talkie Headset to the Pro 7 – are a result of that level of concern for clearly hearing and transmitting the voice.

Prize #16 Heil Pro7

And the winner is: Marvin KI5MM

I noticed the Maidenhead Mayhem on the Contest Calendar and liked the format.  With propagation getting good I thought the chance to chase some new Grids would be fun.  I ended up spending all week and odd hours working the contest chasing DX that I would not normally have gone after.  I ended up having to trim the log to get within the time requirements.  The Heil headset was a very nice bonus. Thanks Bob Heil and crew.  I just used it in a contest.  Works great. I can now transfer my Heil Proset to fulltime mobile/portable use.  I am looking forward to seeing where Maidenhead Mayhem progresses next year and having more MM contesters.  Big thanks to Joe WB9SBD for putting it all together and chasing down some great prizes to add a little incentive to the chase. (not that I need much to have an excuse to play radio).

Prize #16  Heil Pro7

The Heil Pro 7 is an aviation-style headset designed for amateur radio use in high-noise environments.

The specially designed foam-gel ear pads provide 26 dB outside noise reduction and provide exceptional comfort.

A true dual-channel, stereo headset, the Pro 7 features an audio balance control that allows the user to adjust the level of the left earphone to match the right.

A unique phase-reversal switch greatly helps the listener “dig out” weak signals.

The latest version of the Pro 7 features a monitor jack, which allows a second operator to plug in headphones and monitor audio.

The flexible gooseneck mic boom on Pro 7s may be rotated for use on either the right or left ear.

Thank you again for CW Morse.US Pocket Double Paddle Morse Code Key With Magnets.  I ordered the base and a cable for the Paddle so it would go on my desk next to the new Kenwood TS590GS.   It replaces the much heavier and bigger Bencher BY-1 Paddle.   The Paddle has smooth action and makes great CW.   Also it is small and kind of cute setting on my desk.
